미국 이베이 자회사인 페이팔의 태만으로 한국 스타트업이 고통받고 있다. 간편결제 서비스인 페이팔이 한참 전에 바뀐 국내 사업자번호 체계를 아직 적용하지 않고 있어서다. 일부 업체는 페이팔에서 출금조차 못 하는 상황까지 발생하고 있다.
국세청은 지난해 2월 차세대 시스템을 도입하기 전까지 새로 등록하는 사업자에게 1~6으로 시작하는 사업자등록번호를 부여했다. 당시 사업자등록번호 10자리는 세무서코드 3자리, 개인 법인 구분코드 2자리, 일련번호 4자리, 검증번호 1자리였다.
세무서 코드는 6개 지역별로 나눠 1~6으로 시작 번호를 부여했기 때문에 7~9가 쓰이지 않았다. 이후 국세청은 차세대 시스템을 도입하면서 기존 사업자등록번호 체계를 없앴다. 그러면서 사업자등록번호 개수 부족을 이유로 이때부터 7~9로 시작하는 번호를 발급했다.
차세대 시스템 도입 이후 '불행하게도' 7~9로 시작하는 사업자번호를 받은 업체가 페이팔 이용에 불편을 겪게 됐다. 올바른 사업자번호를 입력해도 '입력한 회사 납세번호가 올바르지 않습니다. 다시 시도해 주세요'라는 메시지만 뜰 뿐이다.
